Saffron threads are the red stigmas from the crocus sativus "saffron crocus" plant.  It is considered one of the most precious spices in the world.  It imparts a yellow hue and its flavour is fragrant but very subtle.  It is an essential ingredient in Paella, but is used in many exotic cuisines.
